S.H.A.R.K. Program
The Y.A.L. provides an escape from the harsh realities of crime and
gangs with our S.H.A.R.K. Program. S.H.A.R.K. (Sheriff’s High
Adventure for Responsible Kids) is a unique program that introduces
young men and women to the undersea world of S.C.U.B.A. diving.
Young people (between the ages of 14-17) are given 3 hrs of
classroom and 9 hrs of pool instruction in the use of S.C.U.B.A. The
teenagers, after completing the training, are taken out to Catalina
Island where they actually make an ocean dive on S.C.U.B.A. with
deputies.
Our P.A.D.I. dive instructor (Chris Denny) donates two diving
scholarships a year, one for a boy and one for a girl, who are
serious about becoming certified in diving.
The close one on one interaction with deputy sheriffs allow the
participants to become acquainted with the "human being" behind the
badge. The participant sees that there is a better world out there,
one beyond gangs and crime.
For additional information about the S.H.A.R.K. program, contact the
Deputy Jonathan Adamson at (626) 934-3077 or simply stop
by and say “HELLO” at the City of Industry Sheriff's Station
Community Service Center located at 205 North Hudson Ave. (directly
across the street from the Sheriff’s Station.) |
